Arno Geiger: About Sally

p. 363, Book Guild Gutenberg, 18.90 €, ISBN 978-3-7632-6342-4

After reading some unsatisfactory experiences of the past few weeks I can say - finally a good book. Arno Geiger is a master of observation and a master of language. I was amazed how a 42 years man can put themselves into the psyche of a 50-year OB-wife.

tells the story of Sally and Alfred. It is the story of her marriage, which is not the worst, as in any marriage, it comes after many years, to a certain monotony, which both try to escape in the course.

stands in the foreground but Sally, which is a house burglar extremely annoyed by Alfred. For those of burglary charged in his private life very much, he suffers from the very private things taken or destroyed. Sally is not such understanding, not even that withdraws Alfred in his home and his support stockings, he wears because of his varicose veins, take me anymore wants.

you refuge in an affair with Erik, the man of a friendly couple. Everything is exciting and Sally feels young again, to Nadja, Erik's wife announced that Erik wants to divorce her for another, younger Russian. Sally is confused and suffers.

Geiger told the story primarily from Sally's point of view. But he also changes the Persepektiven - sometimes quite neutral from outside and at the end of the book Alfred has his say and we are very surprised at how much awareness he nevertheless, while Sally thinks it really very naive.

I especially like the language, the use of Arno Geiger. The book has many wonderful sets of poetry and profound truth, as this one: to

"Alfred looked at the closed door, and no need to dress in precise words, he knew that his marriage to Sally was the only one that still possessed the ability to arouse his curiosity in this world. "

"'The only pity is that our attack has membership took on the civic life less than ten years, "she said. It was amazing how you could wander away with one sentence over such long periods. All those little things that were associated with long, strong threads suggested, quietly. "The only blemish

, which the novel for me was the portrayal of the young relationship, when both were living together in Egypt and Sally decided to Alfred for ever. For me, this part is too long and seemed disconnected from the real issue. This time does not really matter for what happened later. This would Geiger can connect either a shorter or a more meaningful connection to set the course of the marriage must.

However, it remains a terrific description of a good marriage and what it represents, despite the outbreaks, which have both, but in the end they know why they have decided for each other. A truly significant book.
